Island of Lost 2022 Girls Magnet
I love Island of the Lost Girls!
The story of three young girls trying to stay together while trapped in a sea cave filled with crashing waves, hundreds of sea lions, and monstrous elephant seals. Presented at the 9th San Diego Film Awards (2023). Its gripping plot, exceptional performances by young actresses fearlessly performing their own stunts, and stunning camerawork on a remote island make this a must-see family thriller that kept me on the edge of my seat. The story revolves around three young sisters accidentally stranded on a remote island. They battle the dangers of nature and wildlife while trying to stay together and survive an exciting, unforeseen adventure. I love the originality of the story that kept me hooked the whole time.
The girls’ resilience in the face of challenges adds depth to the story
The only downside is that the film is a bit long, making it difficult to maintain its intensity. The cinematography fully immerses the audience in a captivating world, with stunning shots showcasing the wild beauty of the remote island and close-ups that enhance emotional moments such as the sisters’ struggles. The camera effectively captures encounters with wildlife such as sea lions and elephant seals, which heightens the film’s tension. Dynamic camera angles in the sea cave enhance the sense of adventure and danger. The costumes fit the story perfectly—since the girls are stranded on a remote island, they predominantly wear wet bathing suits throughout the film. The isolated island off the coast of Baja, California, provides a stunning and mesmerizing setting with its rugged coastline, sea caves, and natural wildlife such as sea lions and elephant seals.
Background music, main score, and sound effects enhance the film’s narrative
It creates a sense of realism that enhances the adventure and danger of the girls’ journey. One of the most notable locations is the sea cave, which becomes the story’s central element of suspense and wonder. The cave’s dark, labyrinthine passageways, illuminated by natural light, give the cave an air of mystery and danger. Notably, the music intensifies at critical moments, such as when the girls face danger or navigate dangerous waters, building effective tension. The natural sounds of the sea, waves, and wildlife make the audience feel closely connected to the characters and their struggle for survival. The main characters are played by real-life sisters Autumn Schmidt, Avila Schmidt, and Scarlet Schmidt.
The sisters begin by being carefree and adventurous, embarking on a fun day at the beach
However, their characters change significantly as the story progresses and they find themselves stranded on the remote island. They evolve from carefree individuals to determined and resourceful young girls who must rely on each other to survive. Each sister faces personal challenges and fears, and their growth is evident in their ability to face and overcome these obstacles. This film benefits greatly from the collaboration of the filmmaking family, with parents Ann-Marie Schmidt and Brian Schmidt co-directing and writing the film with their daughter Avila Schmidt. Their combined talents result in a cohesive and emotionally compelling narrative and excellent performances from their daughters Autumn, Avila, and Scarlet. My favorite part is when the girls dare to escape their house and sneak to the beach.
This scene captures their spirit of adventure and sets the tone for the entire film
It’s a moment of excitement and anticipation as the sisters embark on a day of carefree fun. The scene effectively establishes their characters and their close bond, making it a memorable and captivating start to their remarkable journey. The film’s message is about the strength of family bonds and the ability to adapt and grow in the face of adversity.
